59. What is This?

05/07/2013

It’s been a while since I posted anything here. There’s a frustrating wait until we can all be available for the next critical stage – making up the struts and cables that attach the wings to the fuselage.

In the meantime, I’ve spent an hour in the workshop making this.

Can you guess what it is / they are?Leather Washers

No?

They are little leather washers that will fit between the internal bracing cables and wires where they cross over to stop them rubbing and wearing each other out. I’ve used a hole punch to make lots of 1/2″ (12mm) circular pads, with four holes for the whipping twine which will be threaded round both wires like a button.

The rest of it will go to make up the pads that fit round the holes in the fabric where the control cables come through,  but we shan’t be needing those for a little while…

The leather came from Martin Pryce, who’s also looking into making up the padded surround for the cockpit.

The plywood that goes round the cockpit and over the oil tank is one of the other jobs on the list for when we go down. At the back and front, there is a bow laminated from 5mm strips of ash, and Theo’s been puzzling how best to make these. He’s on plan C at the moment, but believes this will be successful, in which case we might be able to get a substantially complete airframe once we can get to it!
