93. Get a Grip!

17/01/2014

You may remember that the original grip on the the top of the control stick was damaged, and that back in September I took it to a man of Kent (or Kentish man?) near Ashford who promised to try and repair it.

Dick Pettet has made a collection of moulds from vintage and veteran motorcycle handlebar grips, so that they can be reproduced, and as luck would have it, he had a mould for a grip identical to ours.

When we took it off, we discovered that Granddad had had a short extension made so that the grip was in a slightly more comfortable position, something we’d been unaware of beforehand.

Repaired grip. You can just see the join, but it looks like new.

We are delighted with the result; there’s a small join line between original and new, which proves that it’s the original grip in there, but it’s a perfectly robust repair that is completely serviceable and looks like new. Many thanks to Dick at Dial Patterns for what he’s done.
