Christmas Day, Imbros.

Bunnie’s first operational mission was in the Avro. Here’s his logbook entry.

‘General reconnaissance over Peninsula to see what it is like. Visited Suvla, Anzac, Helles, Kilid Bahr, Chanak and submarine net. Archie not much trouble, always well behind. Did not worry about landing and in consequence made most excellent one.’

This took one and a half hours, at a maximum height of 7500ft. He’d explored most of the combat zone and come under fire for the first time. And don’t forget that Imbros is around 15 miles offshore, so every flight from now on involves a significant water crossing equivalent to crossing the English Channel from Dover to Calais and back…
